Day 351 – Christmas Cards

I just had to send homemade Christmas cards to some of my family and friends that have been reading my 365… so this year I made my own, back in November, when I discovered the company that I use to make my cards with had a 20% off sale. I was not quite ready for to get into the Christmas spirit at that point, but it had to be done … I dug into my box of Christmas decorations and hunted out my favorite “the snowmen”. We have always had a snowman hung on our tree since we were first married – 19 plus years ago…

Experimenting with a white background

Experimenting with a white background

I choose what I thought might be the lucky stars and began setting up with a white background and 2 speed lights. My fast task was to get the background white which was really tricky with white glass objects in front, and then to decide on a composition I liked.

Chaning the arrangement

Changing the arrangement

I experimented and played around with a variety of arrangements but I was not happy – the snowen looked too much the same… so I went back to revisit the Christmas box….

One light added to the shot.

That is better – 2 different height snowman and Santa … I changed the background too and had to start with the lights all over again. This show has one light only and I wanted to try and keep the background black.

I added a second light from the other side … it is better but I wanted to add a Christmas feel to the image. What says Christmas to me more than anything else … SNOW – which is really strange as I have never really known it snow at Christmas time apart from once … but it is the scene that we association with Christmas…. so it was time to add Snow.

This is the very first time I used it … fake studio snow (although I may have already blogged about it – but I could not share my Christmas card photos till I got them back from the printers and most of them in the post … but studio snow is great fun…

And a little fake snow!

And a little fake snow!

I love it … I am going to play around with the photo a little more and create a landscape and portrait crop of my Christmas cards this year – hopefully the people who are lucky enough to receive one from my limited print run will like it too! Have you made your own cards this year… I would love to see a link or a photo….
